Ethiopia: Civil society org’s urge UN Human Rights Commission to address pervasive human rights crisis in Ethiopia

international rights organizations wrote a letter to members and observer states of the UN Human Rights Council to address the pervasive human rights crisis in Ethiopia.
The civil society organisations said in a letter that they want the UNHRC “to draw its attention to persistent and grave violations of human rights in Ethiopia and the pressing need to support the establishment of an independent, impartial and international investigation into atrocities committed by security forces to suppress peaceful protests and independent dissent.”
“As the UN Human Rights Council (UNHRC) prepares to convene for its 35th session from 6 – 23 June 2017, we urge your delegation to prioritise and address through joint statements the ongoing human rights crisis in Ethiopia,” the letter said.
In the wake of unprecedented, mass protests that erupted in November 2015 in Oromia, Amhara, and Southern Ethiopia, security forces used excessive and unnecessary force to legitimate and largely peaceful expressions of dissent, the letter said.
The letter by the civil society organizations called the 35th session of the UNHRC to urge the Ethiopian regime to urgently allow access to an international, thorough, independent, impartial and transparent investigation into all of the deaths resulting from alleged excessive use of force by the security forces, and other violations of human rights in the context of the protests.
It also called, among others, for the immediate and unconditional release of journalists, human rights defenders, political opposition leaders and members as well as protesters arbitrarily detained during and in the aftermath of the protests.
The eleven civil society organizations are the Association for Human Rights in Ethiopia, CIVICUS: World Alliance for Citizen Participation, Civil Rights Defenders, DefendDefenders (East and Horn of Africa Human Rights Defenders Project), Ethiopia Human Rights Project, Freedom House, Front Line Defenders, Global Centre for the Responsibility to Protect, Human Rights Watch, International Federation for Human Rights (FIDH), International Service for Human Rights, Reporters Without Borders and World Organisation Against Torture (OMCT).

Ethiopia: Rights council says at least 19 killed since regime declared state of emergency

The Human Rights Council of Ethiopia says at least 19 people were shot and killed by regime security forces since the declaration of the state of emergency on October 8, 2017.
The Council in its 142nd special report said extrajudicial killings, mass incarcerations and disappearances have continued in Ethiopia. The Council disclosed photos and names of 19 individuals it said were shot and killed by security forces.
In west Wollega, 29 year-old Degefu Shiferaw and Megersa Bedilu, 28 were shot and killed by security forces. The report said they might have been targeted for taking part in protests.
Security forces broke into a house and killed three brothers, Maregu Jemalo, Abdisa Jemalo, and Tola Jemalo in Arsi Zone. They then buried the two brothers together in one grave, while one of the brothers was buried with Mohamed Beyano, who was also shot and killed by security forces.
The council also listed the names of hundreds of people who were detained since the declaration of the martial law.
Hundreds of protesters, 669 by the admission of the regime, have been shot and killed by security forces during the anti-government protests in 2015 and 2016. Tens of thousands of people still remain detained.

BREAKING: Joint Statement Between Ogaden National Liberation Front (ONLF) and Patriotic Ginbot7 Movement for Unity and Democracy

Delegates from Patriotic Ginbot 7 and ONLF met in Frankfurt, Germany from 15 to 17, May 2017. The delegates held a thorough discussion and assessment of the prevailing political, economic, and social conditions in Ethiopia and the crimes being committed by the TPLF/EPRDF dictatorial regime against the Ethiopian people.
The representatives of the two organizations acknowledged that the current crisis in Ethiopia is developing into a full-fledged catastrophe for the Ethiopian people and the region as a whole. They agreed that if the abysmal condition is left unreversed, it will lead to both humanitarian and political disaster possibly spiralling to the sub region.
After the delegates deliberated on the overall conditions and made a sober assessment of what needs to be done by all democratic forces, both sides vowed that they would take an active role with all stakeholders to create an effective platform and an alternative force that would work towards a process of bringing an end to the suffering of the Ethiopian people under the TPLF/EPRDF tyrannical regime. Thus, lay the foundation for a transitional process that will usher a new genuinely representative democratic order in Ethiopia.
Both organisations categorically condemn the regime in Ethiopia and call upon it to stop its repressive policies immediately.
We call upon all stakeholders to come together to create a common platform to defeat the TPLF/EPRDF Regime and work towards the establishment of a transitional democratic order in Ethiopia.
Both organisations also call upon the international community to side with the people in Ethiopia and help end their long plight and suffering under the current regime.
Finally, we urge the- Ethiopian Military, the security and police forces to stop repressing your own people to shore up an illegitimate dictatorship and align with your people to bring about meaningful change in the country.

General Election 2017: Partner of abducted Andy Tsege stands against Theresa May in Maidenhead

(Islington Gazette) — The partner of abducted Upper Holloway man Andy Tsege feels so hopeless about his illegal imprisonment that she has resorted to standing against the Prime Minister in next month’s general election.
Yemi Hailemariam, of St John Street, is standing in Theresa May’s Maidenhead constituency. Her ultimate aim is to secure a meeting with Mrs May, nearly three years since Andy was jailed in his native Ethiopia.
Andy, 62, is a human rights activist who fled to the UK in 1979, becoming a citizen and making a new life in Islington. But at a trial in his absence in 2009, he was given a death sentence. And in June 2014, while waiting to catch a flight to Eritrea, Andy was abducted at an airport in Yemen.
With her husband still languishing on death row, 48-year-old Yemi announced her candidacy on Thursday, 1,052 days after Andy’s abduction.
“I just want to make a point,” she told the Gazette. “David Cameron was far more engaged, writing letters to us about the situation. Theresa May, on the other hand, has been in power for almost a year and has done nothing at all.
“She actually met the Ethiopian president on Thursday and did not engage him – which I found troubling. Nothing has changed in our case and it becomes more and more outrageous.
“That is why I am standing in this election, to highlight to her constituents how ineffectual she has been. I have no intention of winning: I am actually telling people to not vote for me! Instead, I am asking people to write to Theresa May and highlight my situation.”
Yemi, who in February handed a 28,000-strong petition to Downing Street demanding Andy’s freedom, added: “We need a prime minister who will pressure the foreign office, as [foreign secretary] Boris Johnson as done nothing, either. I’ll be campaigning around her constituency so hopefully I’ll bump into her.
“Whatever happens, she will definitely be aware of my campaign – I can promise that. My ultimate aim is to get a meeting with her, and let her know that this kind of thing cannot be tolerated with a British national.”
The Foreign and Commonwealth Office said it had provided “significant support” to Andy’s family, and that it remains “committed to ensuring his ongoing welfare”.

WHO risks its Reputation and Noble Cause by potential election of Dr. Tedros as its Director-General

by Muluken Gebeyew
Tedros Adhanom Hires US-based Firm to Win Top WHO Job
Tedros Adhnom Ghebreyesus
WHO (World Health Organization)  is a noble international organization established in 1946. WHO began when its Constitution came into force on 7 April 1948- a date which WHO now celebrate every year as World Health Day. WHO has now more than 7000 people from more than 150 countries working in 150 country offices, in 6 regional offices and at its headquarter in Geneva. WHO is currently  the directing and coordinating authority on international health within the United Nations’ system.
The World Health Assembly is the supreme decision-making body for WHO. It generally meets in Geneva in May each year, and is attended by delegations from all 194 Member States. Its main function is to determine the policies of the Organization. The Health Assembly appoints the Director-General, supervises the financial policies of the Organization, and reviews and approves the proposed programme budget.
WHO has had  eight Director-Generals since its inception. They were  from Europe, North America, Asia and South America, The current 8th Director-General, Dr Margaret Chan was first appointed by the World Health Assembly on 9 November 2006. The Assembly appointed Dr Chan for a second five-year term at its sixty-fifth session in May 2012. Dr Chan’s current term began on 1 July 2012 and will continue until 30 June 2017. WHO is currently  on verge of electing its new Director-General in the next few days.

Following the closure of the deadline on 22 September 2016 for Member States to propose candidates for the position of the next Director-General of WHO, the Organization received  six proposed candidates, which is now refined   to three. Among the three is Dr. Tedros Adhnom Ghebreyesus nominated by Ethiopian government. Unlike the two candidates who declared the  figures about the financial support for their campaign, Dr.Tedros’s Information on Campaign Activities doesn’t show such figures. Please check on WHO web site.
Dr Tedros (as he prefers to be called) presented on his CV his educational achievements, qualification, position he held, experiences and publication including his hobbies and vision. He highlighted being Minster of Foreign Affair (2012-2016) and Minster of Health (2005-2012) of the Government of Ethiopia. He has omitted an important political position he has had  on his CV. Is this lying by omission?
Dr. Tedros is one of the nine Executive members (politburo) of the governing TPLF (Tigray People’s Liberation Front), a minority regime ruling Ethiopia. TPLF rules Ethiopia under the cover name of EPRDF (Ethiopian People Revolutionary Democratic Front) with fake elections disputed by international organizations. TPLF is a political organization which came to power under armed struggle in 1991. As its name indicate, the people it “represented” (Tigre) is 6% of the population in Ethiopia. This minority political organization has ruled Ethiopia under Iron fist for the last 26 years. The regime is known for its brutal crackdown of opposition parties, mass killing, imprisonment, displacement, forced immigration, unemployment  and human right abuse documented by international organizations. The regime is famous for cooking  figures (fake statistics) to blind major international organization including financial, development, economic and health organization by delivering  pseudo-truth on development, growth and economic indexes.
Dr.Tedros is central person on all important decisions made by TPLF as the one of nine executive members. He is as TPLF top brass, responsible for millions of people displacement, thousands of killings and  hundred thousands of Ethiopian’s imprisonment. TPLF uses “divide and rule ” policy to rule as minority while dividing majority   by inciting one ethnic and nationalities  against others and one religion against other to sustain its brutal regime. It uses a fake anti-terrorisms  laws to stiffen any dissent or opposite opinion.
Dr.Tedros was appointed as  Minster of Health by late  dictator Prime Minster  Meles Zenawi, not due to the  merit ( there were many professionals  who were his senior, knowledgeable, experienced   and well respected  in the field than him) but due to his belonging to Tigray ethnicity and membership of  TPLF political party. Although Dr.Tedros is presented as gentle, social, smiling, human and darling person  to international organizations, Ethiopians working in health sectors and most oppressed people in Ethiopia  know his actions in the political field.
The “achievement”  he was reported gaining in health field needs thorough investigation as his government are famous for cooking statistics/numbers. When his ” achievement” at country level is scrutinized, the candidate has treated his own citizens differently based on their ethnicity contrary to WHO’s goal of building a better, healthier future for all people throughout the world. Looking through in detail the publications from his ministry, his “achievement” as Minster of Health to Ethiopia was only improvement in “Tigray” region where he belongs against other regions of Ethiopia  in  health service coverage rate, population to nurse/doctor rate, iodised salt distribution, contraceptive method, family planning, antenatal care cover, delivery of birth  by skilled professional, maternal mortality rate, perinatal mortality rate, neonatal mortality rate, under 5 mortality rate, vaccination cover, HIV prevalence and treatment rate etc.
Dr.Tedro’s Ministry of heath played great role in “population reduction” using chemical/ inject able contraceptives against  Amahra People which TPLF consider it as “enemy of TPLF”. There was estimated 2.1 million people reduction  in Amhara region of Ethiopia using this means. The Ethiopian parliament couldn’t figure out for the official National Statistics Census Commission’s report on this “unexpected” reduction of Amahra people. The Commission had reported in 2008 that the Amhara state’s population stood at 17.2 million, coming well short of the 19.6 million projection estimated for the region in 2006.
According some reports, Dr.Tedros  has failed to be transparent by forcing the Ethiopian Ministry of Health to not report and cover up a Cholera epidemic throughout his tenure by simply renaming a deadly epidemic as an Acute Watery Diarrhea (AWD) even after the diagnosis of Vibrio Cholerae was confirmed. His priority in deciding so was to conceal the impact a public admission of Cholera epidemic might have on Tourism and image of his Party rather than protecting the international community and attempting to reach out to the affected areas. Such a sad error due to lack of judgment resulted in a nationwide epidemic.
Dr.Tedros  as Ministry of Foreign affair was making political comments which was false against political prisoners, journalists and denied any of such prisoners being held in Ethiopia. He has shown poor judgement when he presented false statements on political prisoners. He also participated in arranging kidnapping of British Citizen of Ethiopian origin from Yemen against international norms.  A person of such character, morality  and ethics shouldn’t led noble organization like WHO.
There are many people  in Ethiopia who believe Dr.Tedros’s  place is to face International Criminal Court in Hague than as candidate for Director-General in Geneva for WHO. The regime nominated one of its trusted member as  its candidate with full financial backing and international lobby to  lead this international organization to help itself  in  future to dilute any potential international accountability of TPLF’s  atrocities in Ethiopia.
WHO is at risk of tarnishing its reputation  and noble cause by electing such an individual who will face in future International / Domestic Criminal Court for the crime he committed with his fellow comrades under TPLF umbrella against Ethiopian people.
At present Dr.Tedros is presented on social media  and traditional media as knowledgeable, intelligent, experienced health expert and diplomat by the international lobbies recruited by Ethiopian government, some international philanthropists and donor organization. The true picture will be revealed in due time. I hope WHO, the noble organization, will not be part of this ugly mud.

Petition: Oppose Tedros Adhanom’s candidacy for Director-General of WHO

Click here to Sign the Petition

Tedros Adhanom, a politburo member of the Tigray People’s Liberation Front (TPLF) that has been ruling Ethiopia for the last 25 years is in the inner circle of the regime well known for its systematic patterns of political repression and egregious human rights violations against Ethiopian citizens. The abysmal human rights record of the Ethiopian regime is very well documented by all the major international rights groups (Human Rights Watch, Amnesty International and Freedom House) as well as by the U.S. State Department in its annual human rights report.Tedros Adhanom, a politburo member of the Tigray People’s Liberation Front (TPLF)
In 2008, under his watch at the Federal Ministry of Health (2005-2012) there was a major cholera outbreak in Ethiopia’s Oromia Region. As a result of the deliberate inaction of Dr. Adhanom, the preventable and treatable outbreak tragically claimed many lives. Dr. Adhanom’s tenure as head of the Federal Ministry of Health was fraught with mismanagement and gross incompetence particularly as it relates to the monies (USD 1,306,035,989) granted from the Global Fund to Fight AIDS Tuberculosis and Malaria (GFATM).
The audit by the Office of the Inspector General into the USD 1,306,035,989 allocated to Ethiopia found: 1) misappropriation of funds and use of donor funds for unsound and politically motivated programs, 2) substandard quality of constructed health facilities and 3) ineligible expenditures. It was the recommendation of the OIG that the Ethiopian government should refund USD 7,026,929 to the Global Fund.  To this day, no action  has been taken  by the Ethiopian government to refund the money.
The candidate for Director General of a prestigious organization such as the WHO should not only be a person of high personal achievement but should also embody the highest adherence to internationally recognized human rights standards. Dr. Adhanom’s record as one of the leaders of the ruling party in Ethiopia and specifically his record as Minister of Health does not meet the exceedingly high standards required for a Director General of the WHO.
