Int’l lawyers to sue Ethiopian officials in the ICC

Following the broadcast of a documentary film about war crimes and human rights abuses in the Ogaden region of Ethiopia on a Swedish Television Station yesterday, international lawyers have started activities to bring Ethiopian officials before the International Criminal Court (ICC).

The producer, Abdulahi Hussein, originally from the Region now living in Sweden said, after the transmission on the Tv, various media outlets also reported about the documentary. Stellan Garde of the International Commission of Jurists (ICJ) said on the radio that he will put the case before Court.

The Court of the Swedish War Crime Commission also set an appointment with Abdulahi to investigate the evidences and take them to Court.

The lawyers said that they would take the case to the ICC together with the Geneva based ICJ and other human rights organisations.

He said the documentary contained more video clips that were not shown during his previous interview with ESAT. The clips show the genocides committed by the Ogaden region Leyou (Special) Police, the labelling of a lady that criticised the Region’s president as a member of the opposition ONLF, and the speeches by police officers admitting that they have raped women in prison who also gave birth in prison.

The feature is titled “The Dictators’ Prisoners”.

ICJ’s Swedish Commissioner Stellan Garde said to ESAT that they would do everything possible to bring the perpetrators of the crime to face justice.

Stellan said although Ethiopia is not a signatory of the ICC, it is possible to bring the case to the Court via the Committee Against Torture (CAT), which it is a signatory of, and by starting an investigation through the Swedish police.

They will also try to make these evidences available to the UN Human Rights Committee.

The video will be translated into various languages and will be transmitted via international media.

The Ethiopian government has not given any response so far regarding the reports.
