Repressing peoples’ query is illegal: UDJ, 33 Parties

The opposition Unity for Democracy and Justice (UDJ) party and the 33 parties have stated in their press release that although UDJ was permitted to hold the opposition protest in Addis Abeba on September 29, 2013, it has been indirectly ordered to change the demonstration from Meskel Square to Jan Meda, where defence and security offices are headquartered, which according to the law is illegal to hold political demonstrations within the proximity of such offices.
The parties have also stated that at least 101 members of UDJ including the Chairman had been detained in four days alone for promoting the demonstration that was officially recognised by the City Administration.
They also confirmed that they are prepared to sue the Addis Abeba Police and the City Administration to compensate them for the moral, financial and material damages they have incurred.
In the joint demonstration that UDJ and the 33 parties organised, tens of thousands of people have condemned the governments’ human rights abuses.
The demonstrators had also asked the government to find immediate solutions to the economic problems of the country.
